Menopause awareness in schools
Are you a menopause-friendly school? The great news is that many more schools are, as we’re seeing a dramatic rise in leadership teams booking our Menopause Awareness sessions.
But why is menopause awareness so important in schools?
75% of teachers are female. And, whilst the number of over 50-year-old women in UK employment has been steadily on the rise over the past 20 years, the number of over 50-year-old women in education has dramatically reduced.
A quarter of women going through menopause have considered leaving teaching. Those that stick with it can find the demands of the job even tougher when they have menopausal symptoms and can’t, for example, pop to the loo in the middle of a lesson.
And menopause isn’t just a ‘problem’ for ladies of a certain age. We’ve had great feedback from a wide range of people who’ve been to our training and now have a better understanding of what it can be like for their colleagues, family members and friends.
We don’t know about you, but getting the school nurse in to teach Year 6 Sex Ed is always more comfortable than doing it yourself. The same applies to this. Unless, of course, you’re happy to stand up in front of your team and chat about sore boobs, lube and dry vaginas?
Still not sure? Here’s some recent feedback from a session with Sarah Creegan:
‘Just wanted to say thanks very much for our menopause session today. Sarah was absolutely brilliant – just got exactly the right balance of information, matter of factness and humour. Feedback from staff was really positive, including an email which simply said:
‘WOW … the staff meeting was BRILLIANT. Thank you for organising it.’
