Resilience and FLIP-it Thinking with Battersea Dogs and Cats Home

After having a growth mindset session last year, our Laura was delighted to be invited back by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home to do another session this month, focusing on resilience. Made more exciting by the fact that the session was at Battersea Arts Centre. They had a job to keep her off the stage…

As part of their Team Day, Laura was asked to deliver Laughology’s ‘FLIP it Thinking’ session as a way to bring the group together in a fun environment and reflect on beliefs or ‘wonky thinking’ (as we like to say) that might be holding them back.

Just like behaviours and feelings, wonky thoughts are habits that have been repeated several times. The more they are repeated, the stronger they get. However, we don’t have to be at the mercy of them. If we consciously identify them and recognise what’s causing them, we are able to proactively challenge and change them. Crucially, to succeed, we have to want to change them, which requires hard work and determination.

However, hard work can be fun, especially during a Laughology session!

FLIP-it Thinking is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and is a practical model that is easy to use. It encourages you to:

  • Focus on the facts of a situation, not feelings.
  • Consider whether the Language you are using is helpful or holding you back
  • Highlights the power of our Imagination and how to use it to our advantage for positive outcomes
  • Practice, practice, practice our new habits in order to break existing, unhelpful Patterns in our thoughts and behaviour

All Laughology sessions are highly interactive and encourage participants to have a go at a number of activities, which in some instances induce hysterical laughter, but always have an explanation and learning to underpin them.

The session for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home had plenty of that, especially when it came to pairing up and drawing each other’s faces… I say no more. It was great to be back with such a lovely group of people who were definitely up for laughing… and learning. Thanks all.
