In June, we welcomed 7 brave people from different North West businesses to a 4-week crash course in stand-up comedy, as part of a charity fundraising project for Lagan’s Foundation.
They were trained by Laughology’s Lead Facilitator and professional comedian Kerry Leigh and also supported by Laughology’s Head of People, Sarah Brown.
The final part of the course was delivering a 5-minute routine to a live audience at Real Axe, Dunscar, Bolton. So, for one night only on the 30th June, they took to the stage as comedians and delivered lots of funny stuff to more than 100 people. The audience loved it, there were lots of laughs, smiles and applauds on the night.
It was a huge challenge for our performers, none of whom had any stand-up experience, beyond cracking a few jokes in the office or down their local. There were undoubtedly nerves on the night, but we knew these would be outweighed by the laughs.
Performing alone on stage with just a microphone and an audience unlocks a type of confidence no other training course can provide. So much so that they all now want to go and do an open mic session!
Being able to find humour in everyday life is one skill. Being a stand-up comic, presenting, engaging with an audience and performing are the others.
Not only did they perform amazingly, but they also helped to raise over £4000 for Lagan’s Foundation.
Communicating with others, presenting yourself in everyday situations, coping with bad days and being able to laugh at yourself whilst also making your peers, colleagues and clients laugh too, are just some of the benefits that were mentioned as a result of the course.
