Laughology Spotlight on… Laura Drury

Our Laura Drury was always encouraged and praised by her parents for working hard at school. Whatever the results, a positive attitude was key.

Having this as the bedrock for life served Laura well, but it became apparent very early on that working hard didn’t necessarily mean working right. Her biggest obstacle was her belief about her ability. She was very much of a fixed mindset and wasn’t yet equipped with the tools to be curious and think differently.

Laura discovered these while at drama school, where many of the topics she’d struggled with in school, such as History, English, and Business Studies, were brought to life through historical plays, Shakespeare, and setting up a theatre company.

What fast became apparent was that if Laura wanted to do something, she went at it hammer and tongs, and absolutely did it! She also realised that if the person teaching was passionate about their subject, then Laura became that way too.

After her notorious success, fame, fortune and notoriety in the acting world…ahem… Laura decided to leave the bright lights of stardom and shift her fascination from the characters she was portraying to real people. Here, she discovered her love for behavioural science, positive psychology – and the human brain.

All of this paved the way for her to find and work with Laughology. That and the belief that she was funny. Even though it took a while (and some practice) for people to agree with her…

Having changed her attitude and beliefs about her own ability and potential, she was determined to help others do the same.

From treading the boards to laughter and learning

With the smooth transition from the acting world to learning and development, over the next 20 years, Laura worked with all sorts of organisations, predominantly focusing on communication, impact and influence.

She then trained as a coach and worked as a freelancer with various consultancies and organisations, including SSP, the CIPD, and Magnified Learning, for both business and education purposes. She occasionally dabbled in getting her own customers, too.

Then, in 2008, she stumbled across Laughology and hasn’t looked back.

Laura’s infectious energy, passion, and enthusiasm for thinking and working differently spread faster than germs on the Northern Line at rush hour in 31-degree heat but thankfully leaves you feeling a whole lot better and happier. She will positively challenge those who are sceptical, using her experience as a coach to help her do this.

She believes that with curiosity, open-mindedness, and a well-thought-out plan (combined with the aforementioned hard work), you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

With that perfect mix of approachability, amiability and gravitas, Laura is one of our more experienced Laughologists and works with people at all levels of seniority. She also likes to yield the pen every now and again and get creative behind the scenes, working on programme and session content.
